Sandbox bypass via image-controlled checkpoint restoration
Published Oct 13, 2026 · Updated Oct 13, 2026
Sandbox bypass in Podman's podman run command allows attackers to gain extra container privileges through crafted checkpoint images. ContainerRun treats the io.podman.annotations.checkpoint.runtime.name image annotation as a restoration trigger and substitutes checkpoint configuration for requested container restrictions. Exploitation requires an operator or workflow to launch an untrusted image with a rootful backend; rootless containers are unaffected, and the established consequence is loss of requested confinement rather than guaranteed host takeover.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
