Offline plaintext recovery via misapplied PBKDF2 size
Published Oct 6, 2026 · Updated Oct 6, 2026
PBKDF2 hashing in Cloak 0.7.0 through 0.9.2 and Cloak.Ecto 1.0.0-alpha.0 through 1.3.0 lets attackers recover low-entropy plaintexts offline. The PBKDF2 field's dump/1 callback passes config[:size] as the round count while validating but ignoring config[:iterations], reducing the default Cloak.Ecto work factor from 600,000 to 32. Exploitation requires both stored hashes and the configured secret; the flaw does not itself expose either one.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
