Faulty image decoding via BMP height overflow
Published Sep 20, 2026 · Updated Sep 20, 2026
Integer overflow in SerenityOS LibGfx BMP decoding allows attackers to corrupt image-size and frame calculations with a crafted BMP file. The DIB parser accepts the minimum signed 32-bit height and later negates it for top-down image sizing, which overflows before size and frame decoding. The malformed file must reach a LibGfx consumer; public evidence demonstrates the parser defect but does not establish code execution or a system-wide outage.
