Stack buffer overflow via negative protocol ID
Published Oct 2, 2026 · Updated Oct 2, 2026
Stack-based buffer overflow in Apache Thrift C++ THeaderTransport before 0.25.0 allows context-dependent attackers to corrupt memory via a negative protocol ID. Its writeVarint32 function right-shifts the signed value while writing to a five-byte stack buffer; a negative value retains its sign bit, so the loop writes beyond that buffer. Reaching the flaw requires an application to pass a negative protocol ID into outgoing header construction; the public source does not establish that a network peer can choose that ID.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
