Child-process restart via VCL workspace overflow
Published Sep 18, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Workspace buffer overflow in Vinyl Cache before 9.0.2 and affected Varnish Cache releases allows remote attackers to restart the child. The VCL string .upper() and .lower() methods exhaust the remaining workspace and write beyond its buffer while transforming an oversized string. Exploitation requires knowledge of the deployed VCL and a request string sized to fill the call-site workspace without exceeding configured request limits; success interrupts service by crashing or asserting the child before its automatic restart.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
