Unauthenticated stored XSS via unescaped mail errors
Published Oct 3, 2026 · Updated Oct 3, 2026
Stored cross-site scripting in James Ward Mail logging – WP Mail Catcher 2.1.12 and earlier lets remote attackers inject scripts via mail errors. The plugin saves PHPMailer's wp_mail_failed error text, then renders the saved error in WordPress administration without escaping attacker-controlled mail-field content. Exploitation requires another plugin, such as Contact Form 7, to pass unauthenticated input into a failed mail message; the script executes when a user opens the affected log.
