Account takeover via predictable recovery tokens
Published Sep 18, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Weak password recovery in Cotonti 1.0.0 and earlier allows remote attackers to take over accounts via predictable reset tokens. users.passrecover.php hashes microtime() with MD5, while a case-mismatched variable guard always generates a new token with about one million candidates per second. Exploitation requires timing guesses from the server Date header and probing the recovery endpoint, but no account or user interaction.
