Kernel crash via oversized SMBus block transfers
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
Out-of-bounds memory access in the Linux kernel I2C/SMBus core allows local users to crash the kernel via oversized block transfers. In __i2c_smbus_xfer(), length validation occurs after the smbus_write tracepoint and is bypassed for native smbus_xfer callbacks, allowing copies and i2c-stub loops to exceed 34-byte buffers. Triggering the flaw requires write access to an I2C device node and a path that processes a caller-supplied block length; observed effects are out-of-bounds reads and writes.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
