Wi-Fi frame drops via uncapped receive MCS
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
Improper receive metadata handling in Linux ath11k allows physically proximate attackers to trigger valid Wi-Fi frame drops. When ath11k_dp_rx_h_rate() receives an HT, VHT, or HE MCS above mac80211's representable range, it leaves rate_idx out of range and encoding at RX_ENC_LEGACY, causing mac80211's sanity check to reject the otherwise valid frame. Reachability requires compatible ath11k radio hardware and such a reported MCS; the observed consequence is the affected frame's loss and a kernel warning.
