Local service hang via ext4 lock inversion
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
Deadlock in ext4 migration in Linux 5.6 and affected stable branches allows local users to hang filesystem operations via an ioctl. ext4_ext_migrate holds s_writepages_rwsem while iput(tmp_inode) enters eviction and waits for sb_internal; concurrent orphan cleanup holds sb_internal and waits for that rwsem. Triggering the cycle requires ioctl access to an ext4 file and concurrent orphan cleanup, leaving affected filesystem tasks blocked.
