Kernel panic via device-private PMD race
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
A memory-management vulnerability in Linux kernel 6.19 allows local users to trigger a kernel panic via a huge-page race. In madvise_free_huge_pmd(), an HMM GPU migration can replace a checked PMD with a device-private entry before locking, leading to pmd_folio() on a non-present entry. The trigger requires local access, an HMM-capable GPU driver, and a concurrent madvise(MADV_FREE) race; impact is service interruption through a kernel panic.
