Kernel crash via racy stop-queue drain
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Linux mac80211_hwsim has a queue-drain race that allows local users to crash the kernel while stopping a simulated radio. mac80211_hwsim_stop() checks data->pending for emptiness separately from dequeuing, so concurrent TX status handling removes the final frame and leaves a NULL skb passed to ieee80211_free_txskb(). Exposure requires the simulator to be active and stop processing to overlap TX status completion; the published Amazon Linux assessment requires high privileges and identifies availability-only impact.
