Kernel crash via unchecked ACPI companion
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
NULL dereference in Linux 5.14 surface_acpi_notify allows local users to crash the kernel via forced driver binding. The san_probe() function uses the ACPI_COMPANION() result without checking for NULL when installing the GSBUS address-space handler. Triggering requires access to force-bind the driver to a device without an ACPI companion; the established consequence is a kernel fault, not data disclosure or code execution.
