Poison-scan hang via empty mailbox response loop
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
An infinite loop in Linux CXL mailbox handling allows attackers to hang poison scans through crafted device responses. In drivers/cxl/core/mbox.c, zero records with CXL_POISON_FLAG_MORE keep the record counter unchanged while poison.mutex stays locked. A malicious CXL device and a sysfs-triggered scan are required; subsequent poison operations on that device remain blocked.
