Kernel memory corruption via unchecked help-name indexing
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Out-of-bounds writing in Linux 2.6.37 Speakup allows local users to corrupt kernel memory via malformed function names. In drivers/accessibility/speakup/keyhelp.c, help_init() indexes letter_offsets with (start & 31) - 1 without validating the first byte of a sysfs-overridden function name. Triggering requires root access to change function_names and activation of Speakup help on a terminal; the disclosure establishes an out-of-bounds write, not a demonstrated privilege escalation or specific crash outcome.
