Host filesystem writes via builtin subpath bypass
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Sandbox escape in Patrik Simek vm2 3.11.6 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to write host files through sandboxed NodeVM code. In lib/builtin.js, wildcard exclusions compare exact module names, so denying fs leaves fs/promises and node:fs/promises accessible. Exploitation requires a NodeVM using the builtin wildcard with a negative fs entry; successful access permits host file creation, modification, reading, or deletion.
