Host command execution via unrestricted nested NodeVM
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Remote code execution in Patrik Simek vm2 before 3.11.7 allows remote attackers to execute host OS commands through sandboxed code. In makeResolverFromLegacyOptions, unrestricted root paths and the default host require context let code load vm2 itself and create an unrestricted NodeVM. The application must enable require.external without a require.root that excludes node_modules; exploitation grants the host process account's file and command privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
