Application stall via quadratic isoDate matching

Published Sep 16, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026

Regular expression denial of service in joi 17.2.0 through 17.13.6 and 18.0.0 through 18.2.5 allows remote attackers to stall applications. An unanchored expression in Joi.string().isoDate() restarts matching at every input position when a valid ISO date is followed by a long run of fractional-second digits, producing quadratic processing time. The application must pass attacker-controlled input to isoDate validation; one crafted request can consume the event loop for seconds and interrupt service.
