Filesystem hang via EA-inode eviction deadlock
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Deadlock in Linux kernel ext4 allows local users to hang filesystem operations via concurrent extended-attribute workloads. ext4_xattr_inode_cache_find() retains an mbcache entry while ext4_iget() waits for inode eviction, whose thread waits for that entry to be released. Triggering requires ea_inode enabled and overlapping inode eviction; the disclosed consequence is blocked filesystem work, not code execution.
