Kernel crashes or data loss via inline-write race
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
A race in Linux ext4 allows local users to crash the kernel or lose file data via concurrent buffered writes and memory-mapped writes. The write_end handlers consult mutable inode flags after write_begin, selecting extent handling without allocated block buffers; ext4_write_inline_data_end also asserts inline state after acquiring its lock. Triggering requires writable ext4 inline data and concurrent conversion to extents, causing NULL pointer dereferences, a kernel panic, or lost writes.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
