Unauthorized page writes via retained mmap permissions
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Permission bypass in Linux 6.6 bnxt_re allows local users to write protected DBR and toggle pages via mprotect(PROT_WRITE). The bnxt_re_mmap() function rejects initially writable mappings but leaves VM_MAYWRITE set on read-only mappings, permitting later write-permission changes. Exploitation requires access to the driver's userspace mapping interface; the established consequence is unauthorized writes to those pages, not arbitrary kernel execution.
