Service interruption via recursive XML entity expansion
Published Sep 23, 2026 · Updated Sep 23, 2026
XML entity expansion in Apache Sling XSS before 2.4.12 allows attackers to exhaust application resources through crafted XML input. XSSAPIImpl.getValidXML accepts DOCTYPE declarations containing recursive internal entities and passes them to an XML parser without an expansion bound. Exploitation requires a consuming Sling application to pass attacker-controlled XML to getValidXML; no data access or modification is reported.
