Local root command execution via VPN profile injection
Published Sep 25, 2026 · Updated Sep 25, 2026
OS command injection in GNOME NetworkManager-sstp allows local users to execute arbitrary commands as root through a malicious VPN profile. The plugin passes unescaped shell metacharacters from CA-certificate or proxy profile fields to the root-running pppd pty shell. Any unprivileged account can trigger the flaw by loading and activating the profile when the plugin is installed; normal VPN use is unnecessary.
