Linker crash via non-ELF section dereference
Published Sep 15, 2026 · Updated Sep 15, 2026
A null-pointer dereference in GNU Binutils 2.47 allows local users to crash the GNU linker with a crafted x86-64 PE input file. The elf_x86_64_common_section_index path calls elf_section_flags while processing non-ELF input, dereferencing ELF-specific section data that is absent. Exploitation requires local execution of ld against the malformed input and terminates only the linker process.
