Local file ownership hijack via symlink race

Published Sep 18, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026

A symlink race in cockpit-files on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 allows local users to redirect ownership changes to arbitrary files. During directory creation with owner assignment, cockpit-files applies chown after creation without ensuring the path still names the new directory. A low-privileged user must control the writable parent and win the replacement race, enabling protected-file reads or unauthorized modification.
