Role escalation via unescaped LDAP filter substitution

Published Sep 28, 2026 · Updated Sep 28, 2026

LDAP filter injection in Apache Karaf before 4.4.12 allows remote authenticated users to alter LDAP user or role lookups via crafted names. LDAPCache and LDAPBackingEngine substitute names into configured search filters while escaping backslashes but not LDAP filter metacharacters, so a name such as * can match an unintended entry. Exposure depends on LDAP filter configuration and an unescaped GSSAPI login or backing-engine role lookup; ordinary LDAPLoginModule and LDAPPubkeyLoginModule login paths pre-escape names.
