Linker crash via crafted ELF orphan section
Published Sep 14, 2026 · Updated Sep 14, 2026
Null pointer dereference in GNU Binutils 2.47 allows local users to crash the GNU linker via a crafted ELF object file. The elf_orphan_compatible function dereferences a null section pointer while comparing an untrusted ELF orphan section for placement. Execution requires a local invocation of ld on the crafted input, and the bounded consequence is termination of that linker process.
