Kernel memory disclosure or crash via malformed super-root
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Out-of-bounds read in Linux nilfs2 allows attackers to disclose kernel memory or crash the system through a crafted filesystem image. nilfs_store_disk_layout trusts the super-root inode size, so nilfs_read_inode_common reads beyond the super-root block when its computed footprint exceeds the block size. Exploitation requires a victim or automounter with initial-namespace CAP_SYS_ADMIN to mount the image; attackers need no host account, and the bounded consequences are memory disclosure and a kernel oops.
