Hugepage unavailability via leaked mount reservations
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Resource leakage in Linux kernel hugetlbfs allows local users to deny hugepage availability via failed mounts with min_size reservations. In hugetlbfs_fill_super(), root dentry creation failure frees the subpool with kfree() instead of hugepage_put_subpool(), leaving reservations charged. Exploitation requires mount access and this allocation failure; the disclosed consequence is resource depletion, not a demonstrated crash or reboot.
