CVE-2026-90264Hinoki check available

Kernel panic via overlapping ordered extents

Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026

A race in Linux Btrfs allows local users to crash the kernel through buffered fallback after a short direct append write. In fs/btrfs/file.c, lock_and_cleanup_extent_if_need() skips waiting for existing ordered extents when the write starts beyond the reverted file size, allowing overlapping extents to trigger a kernel panic. Triggering requires write access to a Btrfs file and the direct-I/O completion race; the documented consequence is a crash, not data disclosure or privilege escalation.
