Local kernel compromise via BPF iterator state pruning
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Improper state pruning in the Linux kernel 6.7 through 7.2.5 allows local users to bypass eBPF verifier safety. The verifier comparison in kernel/bpf/states.c treats STACK_ITER slots holding MEM_RCU and PTR_UNTRUSTED pointers as equal, allowing an unsafe path to be pruned. Exploitation requires low-privileged local access and the ability to load a crafted BPF program, after which kernel data can be exposed or altered and service can be interrupted.
