Mount failure via overflowing MFT cluster validation
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Integer overflow in Linux NTFS3 allows local users to cause mount failure via crafted MFT cluster numbers in an NTFS boot sector. In ntfs_init_from_boot(), unchecked 64-bit multiplication wraps attacker-controlled cluster numbers into sector positions that pass volume-size validation. Exposure requires mounting the crafted volume with NTFS3; subsequent block-layer overflow checks reject the reads, resulting in mount failure rather than a demonstrated kernel crash or code execution.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
