Device-deletion hang via allocation-failure retry loop

Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026

A teardown loop in Linux 7.1 ublk allows local users to hang device deletion when shared-memory cleanup repeatedly fails allocation. In __ublk_shmem_remove_ranges(), failed xa_store(..., GFP_ATOMIC) leaves a range unerased, so ublk_shmem_remove_ranges() immediately retries it without progress. The documented trigger requires a registered SHMEM_ZC buffer and privileged fault injection; deletion remains stuck while allocation failures persist, with no demonstrated crash or data disclosure.
