Out-of-bounds read via undersized daemon IPC replies
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Out-of-bounds reading in Linux ksmbd allows local users to trigger kernel memory reads via undersized daemon IPC responses. In fs/smb/server/transport_ipc.c, ipc_validate_msg() reads response length fields before checking that the allocated buffer contains their structures. Triggering requires a buggy or compromised ksmbd.mountd daemon, not a remote SMB client; the demonstrated consequence is a kernel out-of-bounds read.
