GPU hang via incorrect scratch-VM fault acceptance
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 17, 2026
Fault handling in the Xe driver in Linux 7.1 allows local users to hang the GPU via non-fault-mode scratch VM page faults. In drivers/gpu/drm/xe/xe_pagefault.c, ASID lookup admits scratch-enabled dma-fence VMs, and the handler reports success for an already valid VMA without resolving the fault. Triggering requires access to the affected GPU driver and this fault condition; the GPU then retries indefinitely, with no disclosed data access or modification.
