Firewall enforcement inconsistency via premature hardware offload
Published Sep 17, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
State inconsistency in the Linux kernel's nf_tables component allows attackers to desynchronize software and NIC-offloaded rulesets. In nf_tables_commit, nft_flow_rule_offload_commit ran before allocation and preparation of the next-generation chain blob, so a later preparation failure could leave the NIC updated while the software ruleset remained unchanged. Reachability requires hardware offload and authority to commit an nftables ruleset; published sources do not specify which traffic is wrongly allowed or blocked.
