Crash or memory corruption via truncated kexec ranges
Published Sep 16, 2026 · Updated Sep 16, 2026
Memory-range truncation in Linux 5.9 and affected later commits allows attackers to corrupt active memory or crash a powerpc system during kdump. The __merge_memory_ranges function compares each range with the prior array element rather than the active merged range, then replaces the merged end without retaining the larger boundary. The condition requires a powerpc kexec_file/kdump path with nested overlapping ranges; public sources establish no unprivileged trigger.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
