Local root escalation via socket ownership race

Local privilege escalation in gvfs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 through 10 allows local users to gain root via a socket-path race. The privileged gvfsd-admin daemon calls link-following chown() on a new private D-Bus socket pathname inside a user-controlled directory, allowing a TOCTOU swap to a symlink. An authenticated local user who wins the race can take ownership of a root-owned file, modify critical authentication data, and obtain root privileges.
