Process crash via misaligned WAV field store
Published Sep 24, 2026 · Updated Sep 24, 2026
Denial of service in libsndfile 1.2.2 allows attackers to terminate processes on strict-alignment systems with a crafted WAV file. In psf_binheader_readf(), the '4' parser case casts a potentially unaligned wav_fmt field to unsigned int * and performs two 4-byte stores. The fault causes a bus error on strict-alignment architectures or a trap in fail-fast undefined-behavior-sanitizer builds, while ordinary x86 builds tolerate the access.
