Application termination via zero-buffer compiled rule arena
Published Sep 22, 2026 · Updated Sep 22, 2026
A reachable assertion failure in YARA 4.5.8 allows attackers to terminate an application by supplying a crafted compiled rule file. The yr_arena_load_stream() path accepts a .yrc arena header with num_buffers set to zero, after which yr_arena_get_ptr() asserts that a requested buffer index is below the empty arena's buffer count. The application must load the attacker-supplied compiled rules; successful triggering aborts that process without establishing code execution or data access.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
