Unauthenticated stored XSS via unescaped chat messages
Published Oct 11, 2026 · Updated Oct 11, 2026
Stored XSS in BuddyPress Instant Chat 1.6 and earlier allows remote attackers to execute scripts via crafted chat messages. The insert_message method accepts a conversation ID without checking sender membership, and retrieve_messages renders stored message content without HTML escaping. Authentication is not required to insert messages; script execution requires a conversation member to view the affected chat and occurs in that member's browser session.
