Privilege escalation via $ORIGIN path race
Published Sep 22, 2026 · Updated Sep 22, 2026
TOCTOU race in the glibc dynamic loader 2.14 through 2.44 allows local users to execute code with elevated program privileges. During $ORIGIN expansion for an AT_SECURE program's DT_RPATH, ld.so validates a normalized path but opens the raw path, enabling a raced symlink to redirect shared-object loading. Exploitation requires a setuid or setgid binary with an $ORIGIN-plus-.. RPATH, hard-link creation, disabled fs.protected_hardlinks, and a won path-component race.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
