Unintended template loading via malformed locale
Published Sep 10, 2026 · Updated Sep 10, 2026
Path traversal in Apache FreeMarker 2.2.0 through 2.3.34 allows attackers to load unintended templates via a malformed locale identifier. Localized lookup incorporates the untrusted locale while deriving candidate template names, allowing traversal syntax to influence the resource passed to the configured TemplateLoader. Exploitation requires attacker control of the locale and localized lookup, enabled by default; accessible resources remain bounded by the configured loader and its storage.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
