CVE-2026-84838

Arbitrary command execution via unescaped archive filenames

Published Sep 2, 2026 · Updated Sep 2, 2026

Command injection in rpmuncompress on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and Red Hat Hardened Images allows local users to execute commands. The utility passes archive filenames without adequate escaping into shell command strings executed through popen(), allowing metacharacters to become shell syntax. Execution requires a user or automated workflow to invoke rpmuncompress on the malicious file, and commands inherit the invoking account's access.
