Command execution via unescaped tarball path
Published Sep 2, 2026 · Updated Sep 2, 2026
Command injection in rpm's rpmbuild tarball mode allows attackers to execute shell commands through a crafted tarball path or filename. The getTarSpec() function interpolates the positional tarball argument into a shell command expanded through %{uncompress:...} and passes it to popen() without shell escaping. Exploitation requires rpmbuild -ta, -tb, or -ts to process an attacker-controlled artifact name, and commands run with the build user's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
