Memory exhaustion via premature QUIC connection-ID retirement

Published Sep 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 29, 2026

Resource exhaustion in OpenSSL QUIC 3.4.0 through 3.4.7 allows remote attackers to consume heap memory via NEW_CONNECTION_ID frames. The QUIC channel advances its connection-ID retirement state when it queues RETIRE_CONNECTION_ID frames rather than after the peer acknowledges them, permitting repeated frames to grow the control-frame queue. A remote peer must establish a QUIC connection and withhold acknowledgments; sustained traffic can force roughly 400 MB of allocation, threatening the application's availability.
