Process crash via X.509 extension cache race
Published Sep 29, 2026 · Updated Sep 29, 2026
Use-after-free in OpenSSL 4.0.0 through 4.0.2 allows remote attackers to crash multithreaded TLS clients or client-authenticating servers. The X.509v3 extension cache in ossl_x509v3_cache_extensions() lets competing threads replace and free cached values after another thread receives pointers to them. The race requires simultaneous first-time chain verification against the same shared trusted CA certificate; peer-supplied certificates alone do not trigger it.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
