CVE-2026-84581

System crash or kernel-memory corruption via HFS mount

Published Sep 14, 2026 · Updated Sep 14, 2026

Buffer overflow in HFS in Apple macOS before 15.8, before 26.7, and before 27 allows local users to crash the system or corrupt kernel memory. The HFS disk-image mounting path fails to enforce adequate bounds while processing attacker-controlled filesystem data, allowing writes beyond the intended buffer. Exploitation requires a maliciously crafted disk image to be mounted; the bounded outcomes are a system crash or kernel-memory corruption.
