Arbitrary file write via archive path handling
Published Sep 14, 2026 · Updated Sep 14, 2026
Path handling in file_cmds before Apple's September 2026 operating-system fixes allows attackers to write arbitrary files from archives. Apple has not disclosed which archive entry path forms evade validation or how file_cmds resolves them against the extraction root. Exploitation requires a malicious archive to be extracted and can place attacker-chosen files outside the intended destination.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
