Service interruption via repeated derived-image decoding
Published Sep 18, 2026 · Updated Sep 18, 2026
Resource exhaustion in Struktur AG libheif 1.23.1 and earlier allows remote attackers to interrupt service with crafted HEIF or AVIF files. Derived grid and overlay paths repeatedly decode one base image because processed_ids is copied per branch, while tiled initialization allocates offsets outside MemoryHandle accounting. Any application that decodes attacker-supplied images can hang or exhaust memory; the tiled-offset variant additionally requires the nondefault experimental feature.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
